SENSE AND SAVOURS

“Venetian”, answers Countess Livia Serpieri when asked her nationality by the Austrian general. It was Senso's intense, unforgettable main character played by Alida Valli, her laconic, ambiguous answer, and the thought of her surrounded by heaps of golden grain that inspired the tasting of flavours from Venice, the region that bore witness to Livia and Franz's tragic love, the land of bloody battles of the unification of Italy, the place to which Visconti returned after Senso, to use as the setting for one of his last films, the moving Morte a Venezia.
